The Story Behind the Story

As a little girl, Donnetta Booker loved hearing the stories that her grandmother told her about what life was like growing up during The Great Depression.  Years later, as Donnetta recalled those stories, she realized that although times change, children – at heart – remain the same.  She was thus inspired to create the We Didn’t Know We Were Poor series to share the spirit of her grandmother’s stories from yesterday with children today.  Each book is based on a different episode from her grandmother’s childhood.  We Didn’t Know We Were Poor – Leola and Elsie’s Opening Day is the first book in the series.

What Readers Are Saying

“I thoroughly enjoyed reading from Rick's perspective... while Grannie Leola describes what it was like growing up watching and playing baseball. Leola and Elsie... gave the boys no choice but to respect them, and showed they were just as deserving to play the game.” –Natasha Hastings, USA and World Track & Field Champion Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist

“The story illustrates how persistence prevails when you plan and execute your strategy. Great concept to help children to think beyond the scope of normality.” –Maxine Wright, Author and Playwright
